A. The sins forbidden in the third commandment are, the not using of God’s name as is required;2 and the abuse of it in an ignorant,3 vain,4 irreverent, profane,5 superstitious,6 or wicked mentioning or otherwise using his titles, attributes,7 ordinances,8 or works,9 by blasphemy,10 perjury;11 all sinful cursings,12 oaths,13 vows,14 and lots;15 violating of our oaths and vows, if lawful,16 and fulfilling them, if of things unlawful;17 murmuring and quarreling at,18 curious prying into,19 and misapplying of God’s decrees20 and providences;21 misinterpreting,22 misapplying,23 or anyway perverting the Word, or any part of it,24 to profane jests,25 curious or unprofitable questions, vain janglings, or the maintaining of false doctrines;26 abusing it, the creatures, or anything contained under the name of God, to charms,27 or sinful lusts and practices;28 the maligning,29 scorning,30 reviling,31 or anywise opposing of God’s truth, grace, and ways;32 making profession of religion in hypocrisy, or for sinister ends;33 being ashamed of it,34 or a shame to it, by unconformable,35 unwise,36 unfruitful,37 and offensive walking,38 or backsliding from it.39
