Chapter 6: Of the Fall of Man, of Sin, and of the Punishment Thereof

4. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good,1 and wholly inclined to all evil,2 do proceed all actual transgressions.3

  1. Romans 5:6

    For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

    For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot.

  2. Genesis 6:5

    Romans 3:10-12

    as it is written:

    “None is righteous, no, not one;
    no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
    All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.” (ESV)

  3. James 1:14-15

    But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

    Ephesians 2:2-3

    in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

    Matthew 15:19

    For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. (ESV)
